During a routine inspection

The mobile magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit comprised of a scanner, a viewing room and a small changing area for patients. A lift was an integral part of the mobile unit. The unit attended the Nuffield hospital site three days a week. An MRI scan uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create pictures on a computer of tissues, organs and other structures inside the body.

We spoke with four patients and one relative to find out their opinions of the service. All patients and the relative with whom we spoke were complimentary about the service. One patient said, 'Everything was fine, really good. Everything was on time ' no waiting around.' Other comments included, 'You don't need to worry. You know what's going to happen. It's a comforting experience, it's calming' and 'The experience was really positive ' it was a joy!'

Patients and the relative were also complimentary about the staff themselves. One patient told us, 'Very nice ladies [staff] that I got on with.'

We concluded that before patients received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure patients' safety and welfare.

Patients were protected from unsafe or unsuitable equipment because the provider had a planned maintenance programme in place.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet patients' needs.

Patients' records, staff and other records relevant to the management of the services were accurate and fit for purpose.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to five patients who had a scan during our visit and all of them spoke positively about their experience and the care they had received. One person told us " I was very anxious indeed and am scared of needles. They handled this really well and I felt very supported. They are nice people." Another person told us "I have nothing but praise for the service and care I have received."

We found that people using the service had been given full information about the scan and what to expect on the day. People were treated with respect and courtesy and confidentiality was observed.

The provider's staff had been trained to identify patients at risk of abuse and knew how to report their concerns

Staff were trained and supported to provide the service and received regular appraisal and opportunities for professional development.

There were systems in place to audit and monitor the quality of the service.
