Responsive
Responsive – this means we looked for evidence that the provider met people’s needs.
At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s needs were met through good organisation and delivery.
This service scored 71 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Person-centred Care
We received mixed feedback about whether people received truly person centred care. At times, staff were focused on completing tasks, rather than providing person-centred care. We observed the choice of activities available to people within the servicewas limited during our first inspection visit, however, on our arrival for our second unannounced day, several people and staff were heading out to the seaside for a day out. Relatives were mostly positive there was a range of events for people to take part in. One relative told us, “[Family member] has always been a very private person, but when [family member] moved in, the manager sat with us and we had a long chat about what [family member] liked, and didn’t like, about family and their interests. It shows in lots of ways: [family member] always enjoyed doing crafts but doesn’t like communal groups so someone sits with [family member] in their room once a week and does one-to-one activities.” Another relative said, “[Family member] loves doing crosswords and puzzles, staff know this and there always seem to be puzzle books or a newspaper turned to the crosswords. [Family member] still denies they like them, but I know [family member] really enjoys doing them!” A third relative commented, “[Family member] is part of a circle of ladies who seem to take part in everything, they generally have their meals together too.”
We also had feedback that improvements were needed to ensure people were stimulated, engaged, had their cognitive needs met, and their emotional wellbeing looked after. One relative said, “I get the feeling that there are fewer activities than there used to be but [family member] enjoys flower arranging.” A staff member also told us, “There are good activities…all well attended and enjoyed by [people] and staff taking part, though there needs improvement on daily activities. We have a good group of staff that support the activities and buy or bring in good ideas, but we often do not have the time to run them.”
People’s care plans were not always accurate and personalised reflecting their involvement and details of their individual preferences. We identified the need for greater value to be placed on the level of detail in people’s care and support plans to make them individual, personalised documents, reflecting their needs, wishes and preferences. This was particularly important where people were living with dementia or conditions impacting on their abilities to express their wishes independently.
Despite this staff demonstrated a good knowledge of people’s needs. However, any new or agency staff would not have access to the most up to date information to know how to support people. The provider had already identified that care plans needed updating and took our additional feedback on board and commenced making the necessary improvements straight away.
