All Inspections

23 October 2013

During a routine inspection

We contacted 60 people using the service by telephone or questionnaire. Some people were unable to respond due to the nature of their needs and in some cases we were able to speak to close relatives. We spoke with eight members of staff and the registered manager, examined in detail four care files and three staff files and were provided with a number of documents that we requested.

People and their relatives told us, 'Can't fault them.' 'Very happy with care.' 'One hundred per cent happy with care.' One relative told us, 'Keep up the good work. We are very fortunate with our carer. The company keeps in touch regularly. I am always kept in the loop.' One person told us, 'They give me the time I need.' Another said, 'A named contact from Medacs does regular quarterly checks.'

We found that people and relatives were involved in planning care and treatment to reflect their needs. Their dignity, privacy and independence were respected. Care and treatment was person centred and planned and delivered in a way to ensure people's safety and welfare.

We found that appropriate safeguarding processes were in place to protect people from abuse. Members of staff were subject to appropriate selection procedures and checks before they were employed. They were supported with the delivery of care through appropriate training and supervision. The provider had procedures in place to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. The inspection team was led by a Care Quality Commission inspector joined by an Expert by Experience who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service.

We spoke with 15 people who use the service or to their main carers. We spoke with two senior staff, the acting manager and the risk and monitoring officer. We also spoke to three care workers.

Every service user we spoke with said that they were treated with dignity and respect. They said that they had a sense of feeling safe and were not being taken advantage of.

People we spoke with said that the care and support they had received had met their needs. They said they had been given options about how their care was delivered. One person said, 'all the ladies are quite lovely and we work together to get the work done'. Another person said, 'she is calm and gentle with me, whilst polite and mannerly at the same time'.

Some of the feedback we received about care planning was mixed. Some people said that they could not remember having discussions about their care plans while other people said that they could. One person told us that they had not referred to their care plan but they knew where it was if they needed it.
