During a routine inspection

People told us they were treated with dignity and respect. A relative said of the staff "they are very polite." Staff we spoke with were able to tell us how they promoted people's dignity, choice and independence. However, we found that people did not have a choice of carer of their preferred gender, even when this was important to them.

People told us they were happy with the care and support provided. A relative said of the care "yes, it's okay" and the "service is good." We found that care plans were in place which set out how to people's individual needs. Staff recruitment procedures were robust. Staff had to supply employment references and Criminal Records Bureau checks before they could work with vulnerable adults.

We found the service had a complaints procedure in place. Although people we spoke with said they had not had to make a complaint. The service had various quality assurance and monitoring systems in place. Some of these included seeking the views of people who used the service.

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. We spoke with three members of staff at the time of our visit to the office and during our visit to a person's home. We visited the one person receiving a service as part of this review and spoke with them and their relative about the experiences of the support they have received.

We asked the person to tell us what it was like to receive services from this home care agency as part of a targeted inspection programme of domiciliary care agencies with particular regard to how people's dignity was upheld and how they can make choices about their care. The inspection was carried out by a CQC inspector.

We used a home visit to the person who uses the service and to their main carer (a relative or friends) to gain views about the service.

People told us:

'Mum said she can get on well with her careworkers. When I come the following morning everything is in order. This agency gives us confidence and peace of mind'.

'I am happy with my care and like the girls that come here'.

The relative of a person using the service told us the agency is very flexible and keen to meet individualised requests. They told us their mother liked to go to bed at 10pm and several other agencies they contacted could not provide staff at this time of night. The relative also said the service consistently sent one of the same two careworkers and always informed them in advance as to who would be coming.

The person using the service and their relative confirmed they had been involved in the setting up of the care and were consulted by the agency about how it should be provided.
