Appropriate arrangements were in place in relation to the recording of medicine and medicines were safely administered.

During a routine inspection

351 Maidstone Road was previously owned by Solor Care Group. Solor Care Holdings Ltd were acquired by the Voyage Care Group on 20 April 2012. During our inspection visit we spent time with people in communal areas of the home. We saw that people were content in the home. We saw that staff and the manager of the service interacted well with them and had established effective means of verbal and non-verbal communication with people who lived in the home.

Before people received any care or treatment, they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Where people did not have the capacity to consent, the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements.

People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. People who lived in the home responded to our questions and commented as follows. One person said, 'I am happy here. The staff are mainly ok and my key worker helps me to do my weekly plan". Another person said, 'I like it here, sometimes I go to the shops to buy myself a clock because I like clocks.'

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. The communal and domestic areas of the home looked clean and hygienic.

Appropriate arrangements were not in place in relation to the recording of medicine and medicines were not safely administered.

People who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about care and treatment and they were acted upon.

People were made aware of the complaints system.

People were not protected from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment because accurate and appropriate records were not maintained.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who used the service. They told us they had monthly meetings with their key worker to review their care plan and discuss their activities. We were told this happened 'a lot'. We reviewed three care plans and saw they were individualised and identified people's needs. One person we spoke with said, "I picked these clothes out with the help of my (key worker)." Another said, "They support me to clean my room'.

Our observations of the service showed that staff spoke and interacted with people who used the service in a patient and pleasant manner. Individuals told us "Staff are friendly, helpful and supportive'.

The home had systems in place to ensure people are safe. People told us they felt safe.

One person told us "I feel safe and well cared for'.

People told us that they liked the staff that supported them. Comments included "I like all of the staff who work here" and "All of the staff are kind, I like them all'. Staff were recruited safely with relevant checks being completed before they started work. We saw that they received regular training to help keep their knowledge and skills up to date.

We saw that the provider had systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service provided. This included an annual 'survey' which was given to the people who used the service, to gain information about how they see the service and what, if any, changes they would like to see.
