During an inspection looking at part of the service

We undertook a follow up inspection to Heritage House Care Home on the 30 August 2013 to see what action the registered provider had taken to become compliant. We did not speak to people who used the service during this inspection.

We found that since our last inspection visit each person using the service had a care plan that had been recorded on the new HC-One documentation. Regular reviews had been conducted and the provider had ensured that monthly audits were being carried out.

We found evidence was available to demonstrate that regular audits of the service had been carried out. Those areas of the service audited included care plans, medication administration, pressure ulcer data, weight loss/gain, accidents/incidents and infection control. We saw completed audits for June, July and August 2013.

We found that the provider was now ensuring that people who used the service were protected from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment because accurate and appropriate records were being maintained.

During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit a new relief manager had come into post at the home and was being supported by the regional manager.

One person using the service told us that she was happy living in Heritage House and knew the names of most of the staff. She did tell us however that due to recent changes in the management cover of the home she had 'lost track' of whom the manager was. She told us, 'I know (manager) was in charge, but I think she's gone now.' We explained that a new relief manager had started that day and would no doubt introduce himself to her.

Another person living in Heritage House told us , "I think it is marvellous here, the staff are very, very good and I feel safe."

One visiting relative told us, 'This home was recommended to us by a neighbour, I'm very glad it was.'

During our visit we observed the nurse in charge make numerous telephone calls to various health care professionals such as doctors and community practitioners regarding the health of people using the service. This demonstrated that people living in the home were supported and enabled to access care and support from a wide range of health and social care professionals as required.

Overall we found people were well cared for and we found the provider was meeting the regulations we looked at, with the exception of the regulation which related to records. There were minor concerns and we have asked that the provider take action to address those concerns.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This review took place to check the provider had made improvements in relations to some concerns we identified in the last review. At our last visit to the service we spoke with some people using the service. Everyone we spoke with gave us positive feedback about the care they were receiving. Therefore, we did not seek feedback from people using the service during this review.

During a routine inspection

Those people we spoke with said they were happy at Heritage House. One person said "It's smashing living here." People told us that they were involved in their care, and that staff always asked them for their preferences.

People told us that they were happy with the care and treatment they were receiving. One person said "The girls (staff) are smashing, easy going and they answer you right away if you press your buzzer (call bell)' and 'The staff are very good, I am looked after very well.'

We were told that people felt safe living at Heritage House and people were clear about how and who to report any concerns about their safety to.
