During a routine inspection

Cherry Tree Court is an Extra Care Housing scheme mainly for people aged 55 years and over.

During the inspection, we found that approximately half of the people who lived at the Court had personal care provided by Housing Plus. Staff were available 24 hours a day to provide care and support to people who lived at the Court. Cherry Tree Court was not required to be registered with CQC for accommodation, as people were living in their own homes. They were registered to deliver personal care to people; this is the area we looked at during the inspection.

We looked at two care plans and saw that people had received an assessment of their care needs. The staff we spoke with told us that the care plans were available in people's homes. Care plans gave them the necessary information to deliver care in an appropriate and consistent manner. We saw that care plans and assessments included the management of medication.

There was a recruitment policy in place. We looked at the personnel files of four staff members. We saw that employment checks had been made in line with the organisational policy.

People living at Cherry Tree Court had access to details of the complaints process, which we saw displayed in communal areas. Complaints, both formal and informal were logged, investigated and responded to.

During a routine inspection

This was the first inspection we had undertaken since the location was registered. This was an unannounced inspection. The provider did not know we were visiting.

People and relatives were happy with the service provided. Comments included, "More than happy with the care" and "Very happy".

People said that care was provided when they wanted it and that they could ask for additional visits. A relative told us that the staff visited four times a day and made sure that their relative received their medication and they were taken to the restaurant at lunchtime for their meals.

People were complimentary about the staff. They found them friendly and "very pleasant". One relative said that although all the staff were good they would prefer to have the regular staff to provide the care.

Staff received mandatory training and systems were in place to assess their competency to manage people's medication and to undertake their role. The service was putting in plans to make sure that all staff received dementia care training as well as training relating to specific health conditions.

The views of people were sought about their individual care needs as well as over the running of the complex. Monthly checks were in place to make sure that people were receiving the care they needed. Where issues were raised plans were put in place to make sure these were addressed.
