Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

The provider was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity. Staff always treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Without exception, relatives told us about the high standard of kindness and respect that were shown to their loved ones. Comments included, “Incredibly happy,” “They have a real respect for people” and “They are so happy and safe there.” Every interaction and conversation we saw between people and staff was positive. Staff were attentive, helping people when things were not quite right, for example, selecting the music people wanted to listen to, or helping them to select the right tool in the kitchen to help them with the task they were doing. Without compromising people’s safety, staff stepped back when people were happily engaged, giving them the freedom to achieve what they wanted or simply allowing them time to relax. People were able to go to their rooms whenever they chose if they wanted quiet or private time and staff understood and supported this. Maintaining people’s dignity was at the centre of every interaction. The positivity at the home was clear to see with everyone smiling, engaged in what they were doing and interacting and supporting their peers, all of whom had different ways of communicating and different preferred routines. There was a deep culture of respect at the home and this created a positive, friendly and safe atmosphere in which people lived. Professionals told us of positive working relationships and told us of their experiences and observations. One told us, “The residents are consistently treated with warmth, patience and respect. Staff clearly know the individuals they support very well, including how best to communicate with them, encourage them and help them feel comfortable in a different environment. There is a very positive atmosphere between the residents and their carers, and interactions appear genuine, relaxed and respectful.”
