All Inspections

13 December 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people. There were 35 people living at the home on the day of the inspection. The accommodation was split into two units. We spoke with one person, four relatives, two staff, and the home manager.

We saw that people were well presented and wore clothes that reflected their own preferences and style. We saw staff promote people's dignity, privacy and independence in different ways. One person said, 'Staff always knocked before entering my room and that they respected my dignity and independence'.

Records showed that staff delivered care in a person centred way taking account of people's lifestyles and history. Relatives told us that they were happy with the quality of care and that staff were friendly and attentive.

Relatives told us they felt people were safe within the home. One person said, 'I do feel safe living here'.

Records showed that procedures were in place to keep people safe and staff understood the procedures and were able to explain steps they would take to protect people from harm.

Appropriate arrangements were in place in relation to the management of medication.

We found that the provider carried out regular audits as part of service improvement.

We found that people and their relatives knew how to complain, although all the people we spoke with did not have any concerns.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using this service.

The home is well established however it's ownership has recently changed. The manager has been at the home for three months and was clear about how she wanted the home to improve for the benefit of the people living there.

There were 36 people living at the home on the day that we visited and no one knew we would be visiting. We spoke to six people who live at the home, two relatives and three staff. People were positive about their experiences of care and living at the home. One person said 'They help me to have a bath or a shower everyday' and a relative said 'She is always clean and well presented'.

People told us about the activities that they could join in if they wanted to and people told us about activities they had enjoyed over the Christmas period.

The management of medicines needed to be improved to ensure that people received their medication as prescribed.

People told us that they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to and

were confident that they would be listened to.

People were complimentary about the staff and told us 'They are nice, happy and considerate staff, I am full of admiration for this place'.

We saw that some areas of the home were in need of decoration. Relatives said

'The rooms are basic here, but the care is good' and another said 'The care is very good, that comes first, aesthetics are not a priority'.

Meetings were held so that people could discuss their views and any areas of concern, so that they are involved and make decisions about how the home is run.
