During a routine inspection

We visited Garden Lodge on 20 February 2014. We looked at a sample of four care plans which included health and personal information, risk assessments and monitoring charts. These were complete and up to date.

We spoke with four people who used the service and one person told us, 'I have enjoyed every minute of it since I came here. The staff are wonderful. I hope to enjoy the rest of my time here'. Another said, 'If you call them (the staff) they come right away'.

We spoke with two relatives who were at the home on the day of the visit. One relative said, 'The staff are wonderful. When we walk in we see them having a bit of a laugh with my X'.

There was evidence of a significant amount of partnership working with other agencies. Communication between services was good and letters, recommendations and care plans were followed by staff.

The building was clean, warm and accessible. We saw maintenance records and appropriate health and safety and fire safety checks.

We spoke with three staff members and looked at three staff files. There was evidence of a thorough induction and appropriate staff support through on-going training and supervision.

The home had a complaints procedure and guidance and complaints were followed up appropriately.

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Garden Lodge we spoke with nine of the people living there and observed the support provided throughout the day. We also spoke with two relatives, a professional visitor and four members of staff who held different roles within the home.

Everyone we spoke with made positive comments about the support provided at Garden Lodge, comments we received from people living there included, 'It's very homely. I like it here' and 'We are well looked after'. A relative told us, 'I cannot fault them'.

People told us that they had received the care and support they had needed and that this had always been discussed with them. We found that people's health and personal care needs had been identified and support provided to meet these.

Staff had undertaken training to enable them to identify and report potential safeguarding adults concerns and the people living there told us they would have felt confident to raise any concerns they had.

We found that staff had been recruited correctly and systems were in place to check and improve the quality of the service provided.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Prior to our visit, we had some concerns raised to us regarding the standard of care provided at Garden Lodge. People living in the residential unit of the home told us staff at Garden Lodge were 'Good' and 'Look after you well.' They told us they thought the home was 'Clean' and that there was a good choice of food available.

Due to the different ways that some of the people living in the dementia unit at Garden Lodge communicate, we were not able to directly ask them their views on the support they received. However, during our visit we met with people living there. We spent time observing the support they received from staff with and how they chose to spend their time at home. We have taken this information into account in writing this report.
