Our view of the service
The assessment was carried out between 21 May and 5 June 2026. We undertook 2 visits to the service on 21 and 29 May. This was an unannounced planned comprehensive assessment. At our last inspection the service was rated good. At this assessment the service remained good.
Compton View Residential Care Home is a care home, providing accommodation and personal care to a maximum of 17 people who may have a physical condition or are living with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 17 people living at the service.
We found the service delivered safe, effective, and person‑led care within a positive and caring culture. People were supported by kind, knowledgeable staff who demonstrated a strong understanding of individual needs. Feedback from people and their relatives was positive, with many describing staff as approachable, caring, and responsive.
The provider had a clear, shared vision and way of working. This was built on being open and honest, treating people fairly, respecting human rights, valuing diversity and inclusion, and encouraging involvement. They also showed a strong understanding of the needs and challenges faced by people and their communities.
Systems were to keep people safe. Staff demonstrated a clear understanding of safeguarding procedures and felt confident to raise and report concerns. Incidents and accidents were appropriately recorded and reviewed, with learning used to reduce the risk of recurrence. People and their relatives told us they felt safe, and there was a strong emphasis on protecting people from harm while respecting their rights. Comments included, “The staff make me feel safe. The staff are the best thing for me. That is important to me. I like people around me” and “I'm very happy here. The people (staff) are kind to me and we all get on”.
The service ensured care was planned and delivered in a person‑led manner. People’s needs were assessed before admission and reviewed regularly. Care plans supported staff to deliver safe and effective care. Staff worked closely with healthcare professionals and made timely referrals, which supported positive outcomes and improvements in people’s health and wellbeing. Comments from professionals included, “I have always found Compton View to be a lovely friendly home, led by (the registered manager) and her team…Their engagement with outside agencies is positive” and “We have always found the team to be approachable, organised, and genuinely focused on the wellbeing of their residents”.
Staffing levels were sufficient, and staff worked well as a team. They received training, supervision and support to carry out their roles effectively. There was a positive working culture, with staff feeling able to raise concerns and contribute to improvements. Comments from staff included, “This is a friendly happy place to work” and “I have worked in several care homes. The care here is very good. It is like a family”.
The registered manager was working with the local GP surgery and pharmacy to improve the ordering and delivery of medicines.
The leadership team was visible, approachable and committed to continuous improvement. People, their relatives, staff and professionals spoke highly of the registered manager and operations manager. There were systems in place to monitor quality and safety, including regular audits and checks. When issues were identified, action was taken promptly. The provider also worked well with external partners to ensure joined-up care.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives consistently reported receiving safe, compassionate care. They felt reassured by observant staff who responded swiftly to any changes in need.
Feedback from people living at the service, relatives and health and social care professionals was positive overall. People consistently describe feeling well cared for and treated with kindness and respect. Staff were described as attentive, responsive, and approachable. Comments included, “It is pretty good. I have everything I need” and “I can’t fault a thing here”.
Relatives were equally positive. Comments included, “The care is fantastic here…they (staff) do a grand job…” and “I would give the care and everything here 10 out of 10. We wouldn’t want (person) anywhere else”.
Mealtimes were unhurried and promoted a social atmosphere, with people offered choice and appropriate alternatives. Feedback indicated people enjoyed the food and kitchen staff had a good understanding of individual preferences. Comments included, “The food is very good. I'm eating very well” and “It's reasonably good (the food) and we certainly get plenty to eat and drink. We get snacks all day. I've no complaints about the food”.
Staff followed relevant professional guidance, including that provided by speech and language therapists. We observed people receiving the appropriate level of support with diet and fluids, including one person being assisted at their own pace with reassurance and calm engagement.
People reported there was a range of activities available. They particularly valued exercise groups, themed events, visits to local museums and musicians, and regular one-to-one engagement. For those who preferred to remain in their rooms, staff ensured they were still included through daily check-ins, conversation, and access to reading materials or music.
People were supported to access healthcare professionals as required, and relatives spoke positively about staff collaboration with GPs, district nurses, and other professionals to address health concerns promptly. External health professionals confirmed good working relationships had been established with the service. Comments included, “This is a lovely service, very friendly. We have no concerns” and “The manager has always been good with contacting us and asking us care related questions or concerns about individuals”. This approach helped people feel safe and well supported. Some relatives reported improvements in their family member’s overall health, appetite, weight, and mood since moving to the service. One told us, “We’ve not seen (person) this happy and contented for over 20 years”.
People were confident any concerns raised would be dealt with. Where people had raised minor concerns or niggles, there were addressed. No complaints were raised with us during this assessment.
