During a routine inspection

People all spoke very positively about Walkley Lodge. They told us they were happy with care at the home, thought the service was kept clean and were offered choice in how they spent their day and leisure time. Some people's comments included, 'staff are all nice,' 'it's nice here' and 'I choose what to do, I'm happy enough.'

Some people living at the home had complex needs and were not able to verbally communicate their views and experiences to us. Due to this we sat with people in the lounges, observed care practices and saw how staff interacted with them. We saw that there was clear and respectful communication between staff and people and staff treated people in a kind, considerate and empathic manner.

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Where people did not have the capacity to consent, the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements.

We found that people's needs were identified in care plans. Records showed that people and their relatives had some involvement in the care planning process.

Medication records checked were up to date and regular audits of medication systems were undertaken.

We found that relevant training and support was provided to staff so that people's welfare and safety was promoted.

All of the people and their relatives we spoke with said they had no complaints or concerns about the home.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences.

We sat with people in the lounges, observed care practices and saw how staff and people interacted with each other.

Throughout the observation we saw all staff treated people with dignity and respect by using a positive, friendly and kind approach. We observed examples of good communication skills by staff that utilised eye contact and touch to engage people who use services.

We contacted and spoke over the telephone with two relatives and they confirmed that they were very satisfied with the care provided. One told us 'She is looked after really well, my entire family think the staff are really good with her.' And another confirmed that "The staff are really friendly, they really care about her."

One relative added 'I am extremely happy with the care she receives.'

Sheffield Local Authority Contracting and Commissioning had recently carried out a full monitoring visit. Their report showed that they believed that the service met all aspects of the Essential Standards of Quality and Safety.
