During a routine inspection

We spoke with four patients who used the service they told us they were satisfied with the care and treatment they had received. Some comments made were:

'Spamedica were absolutely incredible I can't fault them. The staff where very caring and supportive and explained everything to me prior to my surgery and after.'

'I was asked about my medical history prior to my surgery and I also felt able to ask questions.'

Records showed assessments were undertaken prior to treatment being carried out. The healthcare plans looked at identified the healthcare need to be treated and follow on treatment regimes required.

Records showed following treatment letters were sent to the referring medical professionals and the patients GP this was to ensure appropriate records were maintained by partner healthcare professionals.

Observations made during the visit indicated the service was clean and there were robust systems in place to maintain a hygienically clean environment to promote patients safety and wellbeing.

Records showed a range of training was provided to ensure the health and safety needs of patients were maintained.

There were effective systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service provided at Spamedica.

We spoke with four patients who said that if they were not happy with the service they had received they would discuss this with the doctor treating them, the service manager or raise it with their referring medical professional.

10 July 2012

During a routine inspection

We did not have the opportunity to speak with people who used the service, however an NHS operational manager involved in the commissioning of the service informed us that 'patients had good clinical outcomes'.

The NHS operational manager who we contacted informed us that she had carried out an audit that included 800 patients. Issues were identified around administration and, in some notes, signatures and completeness. Spamedica accepted the findings and changes were made to ensure these issues were addressed. The move to the Birkenhead Medical Centre addressed many straight away.

She added that 'SpaMedica have had staffing changes and had needed a lot of support but they have listened and taken on board the advice that is given. They continue to grow in confidence and the patients do have a good experience on the whole.'
