During a routine inspection

When we visited Gildawood Court we did so unannounced which meant that no one who lived at or worked at the service knew we were coming. During our visit we met some of the people that lived in the home and visiting relatives or friends. We also met and spoke with the manager, an assistant manager, the senior housekeeper and four members of care staff.

People living in the home had complex needs which meant that they were not always able to tell us their experiences. We spent time during our visit observing care to help us understand their experiences.

We saw that people appeared comfortable and relaxed in their surroundings. Staff were respectful to people, calling them by their name and showing respect, kindness and compassion for people. People appeared at ease and relaxed around staff and were able to approach them freely. Relatives we spoke with told us they were happy with the care provided to their family members. "Mum gets very good care" was one comment made.

People had care plans in place that contained information to assist staff with meeting their care and support needs. Staff we spoke with knew about people's needs and were able to tell us about them.

Measures and processes were in place to ensure that people were protected from the risk of infection.

Recruitment processes were in place to ensure that staff employed by the provider were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people resident in the home, the manager, six care staff and two visitors. Some people living in the home had complex needs which meant that they were not always able to tell us their experiences. We spent time during our visit observing care to help us understand their experiences.

People told us that they were happy in the home, making comments such as "It's great." and "I enjoy it here." Visitors we spoke with also told us that they were happy with the service their friends and relatives received.

We observed positive, friendly relationships between people living in the home and the staff on duty. We saw that people appeared comfortable and relaxed.

We found that people had care plans in place that contained information to assist staff with meeting their care needs. Staff we spoke with told us that they thought that people's care plans reflected their needs and enabled them to provide the care and support required.

We saw that personal care and support was provided in private and that staff were aware of the importance of maintaining people's privacy and dignity.

We found that staff were positive and enthusiastic about working in the home, and had received training to enable them to meet people's care and support needs effectively.
