Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 20 May 2026 to 2 July 2026
Ferrol Lodge Care Home provides accommodation for up to 23 older people who require nursing or personal care. At the time of our assessment, 22 people were using the service.
Ferrol Lodge is a well-established and caring service where a stable and experienced staff team supports people effectively. Staff knew people well, including their individual needs, preferences and risks, and delivered care in a kind, respectful and compassionate way. People and their relatives gave consistently positive feedback about the care provided and the relationships they had developed with staff. During the assessment, we observed a warm, calm and supportive environment.
Systems to assess, plan and review care were established and generally effective. Staff worked closely with external professionals, and people’s health and care needs were regularly reviewed and responded to. Arrangements for medicines, infection prevention and risk management supported people to remain safe and maintain stable health outcomes.
Leaders were visible within the service and promoted a values-based, person-centred culture. Governance systems provided oversight of risks and day-to-day operations. However, these systems were not always applied consistently. Variation in audit quality, action tracking and longer-term analysis reduced leaders’ ability to demonstrate that improvements were embedded and sustained across the service.
Overall, Ferrol Lodge provides good quality care with strong, person-centred foundations. People were safe, supported and treated with kindness and respect. Further development is needed to strengthen governance systems so that improvements are consistently embedded and clearly evidenced over time.
People's experience of this service
People living at Ferrol Lodge consistently described their experience as positive. Many people and their relatives spoke warmly about staff, describing them as kind, approachable and attentive. One relative reflected on the care provided to their family member at the end of their life and told us, "We were allowed to visit at any time and stay as long as we needed. They were brilliant, couldn’t ask for better." Feedback indicated that people felt valued, listened to and treated with dignity and respect. During the assessment, we observed interactions that were calm, patient and supportive.
People appeared comfortable and relaxed within the home. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of individuals’ needs, preferences and routines, and this was reflected in the way care was delivered. People received support that responded to changes in their health and wellbeing, with appropriate involvement from external professionals where needed.
Systems were in place to gather feedback, and people and their relatives felt able to raise concerns. Feedback was generally responded to appropriately, which helped people feel heard and reassured about the quality of their care.
Overall, people experienced a kind, respectful and supportive service, with positive relationships at its core.
