During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out a night inspection at Sundridge Court in order to monitor staffing levels. We found there to be sufficient staff to meet people's needs on duty at the time of our inspection. However we found that people's care was not always planned and delivered in a way that took account of their safety and welfare because risk assessments and care plans were not all up to date or acted on.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This inspection was carried out to follow up on actions we asked the home to take following our inspection on 12 April 2013 when we found records were not completed properly and the home did not always carry out the required checks on staff. At our inspection on 13 June 2013 we found that the home had reviewed people's personal records and staff signing in records were mainly completed accurately. We also found that staff files had been reviewed and action taken to carry out the required checks. We spoke to relatives of people living at the home who told us they were aware of the decisions about their family member's care that had been documented in their records, although they did not all recall seeing the records.

During an inspection in response to concerns

When we inspected the home in July 2012 we found the provider did not always have sufficient numbers of suitably skilled staff on duty and not all records were complete. When we inspected the home on 12 April 2013 we found that the provider had not taken action to address all of these issues, and records at the home were not all accurate and fit for purpose. We also found that the provider's own recruitment processes were not always followed.

People at the home, or relatives of people using the service, told us the staff were kind and caring. One person described the staff as "first class". People told us they really enjoyed the activities offered at the home and most people found the food good. The staff we spoke with knew how to respond to any allegations of abuse and the majority of staff were up to date with safeguarding training. Although people told us they did not generally see their care plans they felt that they received care which met their needs and was in line with their individual preferences. People told us that staff at the home were busy but were able to support people as needed.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by

staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the

quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part

of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes

are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector joined by an Expert by Experience,

people who have experience of using services and who can provide that perspective.

We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way

of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with

us.

People we spoke with said that they were well looked after at the home. They said their needs were met and they were happy and satisfied with the service. They told us that the staff were very supportive and they felt safe at the home.
