During a routine inspection

We spoke with three medical professionals and one nurse from the SIMCAS service. We also spoke with a senior person at the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. The SIMCAS service members only treated patients in emergency situations and the patients were transferred to hospital for their continued care. Many patients were unconscious when treated. We were therefore unable to speak with patients or their families for this inspection.

Doctors and nurses volunteered their time to provide pre-hospital emergency care when called upon by the local ambulance service. They undertook specific training in both clinical and driving skills that enabled them to arrive at an incident and treat patients safely. Those who provided the service demonstrated an understanding of the importance of team working and the chain of command, particularly in emergency situations. Members of the SIMCAS service managed medicines as independent practitioners and described their responsibilities to ensure their vehicles and equipment were properly maintained at all times.
