All Inspections

30 January 2014

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who used the service and four people's family members or representatives. People were positive about the care they received. They told us they felt safe, protected and their needs were met. One person said, 'It's the best hospital I have been in and I have experienced a fair few, this is without doubt the best one. Staff are kind, caring and respectful."

We looked at five people's care and treatment records. People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual needs. Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

We saw that there were sufficient qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. We looked at staff records and spoke with four members of staff who told us they were being appropriately supervised and supported.

We saw that the provider had systems and procedures in place to regularly monitor and assess the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spoke with four people and who used the service and one person's relative. We also spoke with four staff members and reviewed five care plans and medicine charts.

We found that people who used the service understood the care and treatment choices available to them. We saw that people expressed their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. One person we spoke with told us, 'I think it's really nice here and the staff are lovely.'

When we looked at care plans we found that people's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plans. We were told by a person we spoke with, 'I can't find no fault whatsoever ' the staff are so good.'

We found that medicines were prescribed and given to people appropriately. We also found that appropriate arrangements were in place in relation to the recording and storage of medicine.

Staff received appropriate professional development and were able, from time to time, to obtain further relevant qualifications. One member of staff we spoke with told us, 'We are very well supported by our management team here and recently had some excellent training when the unit had to close temporarily.'

People were made aware of the complaints system and this was provided in a format that met their needs.
