During a routine inspection

Young people were treated with respect. Staff protected their diversity, privacy, dignity and confidentiality, with regard to the security measures required. Most young people told us that they had very good access to healthcare services and this was confirmed by our observations and healthcare records. Young people were complimentary about staff, describing them as 'OK' and 'The best staff in the prison.'

The healthcare needs of the prison population were assessed in a timely way and met effectively. Young people had access to a range of information and interventions that addressed their health issues and promoted healthy lifestyles. The electronic patient record, SystemOne, was used very effectively to manage care and treatment. We saw examples of effective joint working with prison staff and onward referral of patients according to their individual needs.

The healthcare facilities were clean and maintained in a way that supported effective infection prevention and control.

Medicines were managed safely; however the arrangements for obtaining medicines were under review, to ensure a more timely supply of medicines.

There arrangements for staff management to ensure that staff were competent to deliver effective care and treatment to young people were appropriate. Further training to support the delivery of specialist clinics was under review.

There were well established arrangements in place for monitoring the safety and quality of the healthcare service.
