All Inspections

During a routine inspection

On our last inspection of the home in January 2013 we had found that people were not adequately protected against the risks of unsafe management of medicines. During this visit we found that substantial improvements had been made. Medicines were stored appropriately and safely.

We spoke with two of the five people who use the service. They both told us they were happy living in the home and described a wide range of activities they took part in outside the home, including drama, swimming, badminton and exercise classes. Everyone had just returned from a week's holiday abroad which they said they had enjoyed very much. People said they liked the staff and got on well with them. We saw staff interacting with people in a caring and sensitive way and responding to their needs.

Staff received appropriate training to enable them to provide the care and support that people needed. They demonstrated the knowledge and skills needed to protect patients from possible abuse. Systems were in place to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received and ensure care was provided in a safe environment.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service. Everyone told us they were satisfied with the service provided. For example, one person told us 'I'm very happy here' and another said, 'I'm doing well here and staying positive.' Staff were described as 'very friendly and kind.' People said they enjoyed playing games and doing jigsaws in the home. They took part in a range of activities in the community and described successful day trips and holidays they had been on with staff.

There were enough staff available to meet people's needs and there was a system in place to manage complaints about the service. However, procedures to manage medicines safely were not effective. People were not protected against the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines.

During a routine inspection

We spent the most part of our visit talking to and observing the person using the service and staff. The person told us that staff were kind and respected their privacy. They said staff asked them about what they wanted to eat. They said staff took them out for food shopping and they were able to choose what to buy. However, the person said they were not happy with some staff because they refused giving them their money to spend it as they wished. The person who uses the service said they would like to have a "friend" who they can talk to and who can provide them with additional support.

We asked the person who uses the service what they thought about the care and treatment they received at the home. They told us they felt supported by the staff and they could talk to them. They said staff regularly sat with them and they talked about their care and treatment. We saw that the home had a system for staff to communicate effectively and assist each other in ensuring people using the service received care that met their needs.

The person who uses the service was positive about the home and service they received. They felt that they could speak to staff and make comments about the service and facilities of the home.
