During a routine inspection

We saw that people who used the respite service were enabled to access different parts of the local community. This information was contained in their care plans.

We observed people interacting with staff in a positive way that promoted their dignity.

We saw that staff had received training in the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and they understood their responsibilities in relation to keeping people safe.

The environment was well maintained and we saw an on-going maintenance programme was in place to ensure any issues with the environment were dealt with quickly. We saw records to show that the equipment used was serviced at regular intervals and was safe to use.

Staff received training to ensure they had the skills necessary to meet the needs of each person. Staff also received support through supervision and appraisals.

The manager told us about a range of health and safety audits which were carried out by the provider. For example, the provider carried out regular maintenance checks, portable appliance tests, fire checks and hot water temperature checks. Equipment used within the service was also regularly serviced. This helped to keep people safe.

During a routine inspection

We checked the care planning documentation for three people who lived at the home. We saw that, when people were not able to use verbal communication to inform staff about their wishes, staff had asked family and friends to assist them in obtaining assessment information and developing a plan of care. Staff had also used their observation skills and knowledge of people to develop care plans.

We saw that each person had an individual care plan and this contained information about the support they needed, their health and social needs and their family networks. Staff told us the care plans were reviewed regularly and updated when someone's needs changed.

We saw that medication was managed appropriately. Staff told us that they received training in the safe handling of medicines before they could administer medicines in the home.

Staff told us that the staffing levels were dependent on the needs of people who used the service as well as the activities they were assisted with. When necessary one to one support was provided to enable people to access the community and to take part in activities.

Information was available as to how people who used the service and/or their representatives could make a complaint if they were not happy with the service. This document was provided in an easy read format for people who used the service. There had been no complaints in the last 12 months.
