Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People’s views and decisions about care were incorporated within their care packages. This helped staff to support people in a way that allowed people to have control over their lives and make day-to-day decisions. Relatives told us, “They [staff] understand what is needed [to support relative]” and “Yes, [relative is able to make decisions about their care], and [relative] loves them [staff]. They [staff] care for [relative] and I feel blessed to have them. I have no concerns.”
People were involved in making decisions about their day to day care. People told us, “I am able to make decisions [about my care] all the time, the staff I have are very good” and “Yes, I am able to make decisions [about the care] and the carers respect my choices.”
People’s independence was encouraged where possible. A staff member told us, “[I support people to remain independent] by not taking away their routine and ways of life, as sometimes that’s all someone has left. For example, if a person can still brush their teeth or wash their hands and face, it’s important to keep this up even if it’s taking time, assisting them rather than doing it for them is very important.”
