During a routine inspection

We inspected the Lichfield branch of Sevacare in January 2014. As part of our inspection we accompanied a senior member of staff on visits to four people in their own homes. Three of those people were able to tell us about their care. One person said: 'I'm very satisfied. The care workers are kind, reliable and respectful.' Another person told us: 'The care workers are wonderful; they do what I need them to do.'

We also spoke with people's family members and other people who were important to them. One person's relative told us: 'Sevacare goes over and above what we might expect'. Another person said: 'The care workers understand the needs; they are amazing; I cannot praise them enough'.

We found that people's care plans were detailed and contained information about their individual needs and preferences. We found that care workers understood how to maintain people's dignity. We found that Sevacare had robust recruitment procedures to promote people's safety.

We saw that clear safeguarding procedures were in place and that care workers understood their responsibilities for ensuring people's safety. We found that Sevacare had systems in place for monitoring the quality of the care provided. A recent investigation into the care of a person leading up to a hospital admission did not find any evidence of poor care, but did provide opportunities for managers and care workers at Sevacare to review the way they managed some of their procedures.

During a routine inspection

We found that Sevacare Lichfield made sure that people who used their service had information about the care and support they would receive. We saw that people had opportunities to discuss their preferences about how they wanted their care delivered. People's needs were assessed and the support plans reflected their wishes and preferences. We saw that people gave their consent to the support plan.

Checks were made on prospective care workers to make sure they were suitable people to be employed. New care workers had full induction training which included safeguarding training and care workers and managers told us that they recognised that the people they worked with could be vulnerable to abuse. Care workers we spoke with told us they were well-supported through supervision and we saw evidence of this on staff files. Care workers had access to a broad range of training.

Sevacare had national and local systems in place to ask people about the care they received. We read written comments about the positive qualities of the care workers employed at Sevacare Lichfield. One person had written, 'They are absolutely professional, but their friendly and helpful manner is of huge reassurance'.

We saw that the care was regularly reviewed and audited by managers. Information from audits was used in supervision with individual care workers and to set goals for the service overall, to improve the service people received.
