During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

Since our last inspection on 25 January 2013, the manager had undertaken the necessary actions to ensure sufficient recruitment checks took place. The manager provided us evidence of a new check-list that was devised to ensure all information required was obtained during recruitment process. We spoke to a senior staff member who told us, the practice had obtained all the neccessary information for the existing workforce. We were informed since the inspection two new staff members had been recruited and all the required checks were completed for them. This included confirmation of identity, personal information including a photograph and Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) checks. In addition references were sought and any gaps in employment were explored and recorded in files. We verified this by the photographic evidence provided to us for one of the staff members.

The implementation of these actions meant that the manager had taken appropriate action to ensure robust recruitment processes were in place and thus reduced the risk of harm to people that used the service.

During a routine inspection

People expressed their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. People told us that 'the staff are really nice here, always very polite' and 'the treatment plan was very comprehensive, easy to understand and gave me all the information I needed to make a decision."

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. People told us 'the dentist was very good, he was very thorough when discussing the treatment plan and how long it will take' and 'I have a very comprehensive consultation before any treatment is started which included costs, treatment plan and the duration of the process.'

The provider was unable to demonstrate that sufficient recruitment checks had taken place putting patients at risk of receiving a service from staff who were not suitably vetted.

We spoke with four people who used the service. They said they could talk to the dentist, practice manager or the receptionist if they had any concerns. They were confident that staff would listen and deal with their concerns appropriately. Everyone we spoke with said they did not have any complaints about the practice.
