Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 4 June 2024

Kenroyal Nursing Home is a care home providing nursing care and support for up to 64 adults and older people including those living with dementia. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this assessment. Date of assessment 15 July to 23 August 2024. At the time of this assessment there were 62 people in residence. The on-site assessment took place on 24 and 25 July, and 14 August 2024. The assessment was prompted in part due to concerns raised around the quality of care people received and safety and the management of the service. We assessed a total of 20 quality statements across safe, effective, caring and well-led key questions. We spoke with people, their visitors and professionals. We spoke with staff, the manager and the provider. We observed how people were being cared for and supported, checked the premises and reviewed records relating to people’s care, staff, and management records. The overall rating for the service has changed from ‘good’, to ‘requires improvement’ at this assessment. We found two legal breaches of regulation in relation to safe care and treatment and the governance of the service. The assessment was carried out by a team of an assessor, inspector and deputy director and an expert by experience, who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. We found areas of concern and identified 2 breaches of regulation relating to people receiving safe care and treatment, and governance of the service. The service did not protect people from the risks in relation to the premises including fire and water safety, infection prevention and control, the equipment used in the delivery of care and there was inadequate quality monitoring processes in place to identify the issues we found. We have taken enforcement action and asked the provider to make improvements in these areas.

People's experience of the service

Updated 4 June 2024

People felt safe with the staff and the care and support they received. A person said, “I’m quite happy; there’s no reason to be scared here, the staff do their job.” People had been involved in the planning their care but not everyone was aware of their care plan. People told us their needs were met by staff who understood how to support them.

People told us they received their medicines on time. There was a choice of meals and drinks and snacks were readily available. We observed people were treated with respect, care and kindness at all times by staff and the management. People were free to spend their time as they wished and enjoyed the in-house activities.

Feedback from relatives about their family member’s wellbeing and quality of life was positive. Relatives could visit without any restrictions. Comments received included, “I’m quite relaxed to talk to staff, they seem friendly and seem to know what they are doing. [Name] likes them” and “[Name] is safe, they are very attentive, and [Name] has a bell in case of emergencies it’s always near them. Staff are always around as well.”

People and relatives knew how to raise concerns and were confident the manger would take action.
