At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s needs were met through good organisation and delivery.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. People and their family members were complimentary regarding the kind and caring nature of the staff. A relative said “All homecare should be like them. The staff are amazing, they go above and beyond all the time and are so caring and kind."

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People’s choices around call times and specialist diets were well recorded in their care plans to ensure they had their needs met. A person said, “They know how I like things- very respectful.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff tried to engage people in the community and often helped them access different services. For example, a person was supported to access advocacy services by the staff in Hazelwood Homecare. This ensured the person was supported with other day to day decision making when Hazelwood Homecare were not available.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. For example, staff observed a person they supported required more support with bathing, so they arranged for an occupational therapist to visit them at home to assess them for more suitable equipment.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. All staff fed back they felt happy and well-supported to be part of the team at Hazelwood Homecare. A staff member said “Being part of Hazelwood in the time I have been here has been good. I feel I have built good working relationships with both staff and clients.”
