During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

Since our last inspection the provider had taken action to review recruitment procedures to ensure that people were treated by staff who were fit and of good character. The provider sent us an improvement plan evidencing that the service was now compliant and had effective, robust recruitment procedures.

The provider had an effective system to ensure that all necessary staff employed were registered with the relevant professional body.

During a routine inspection

Patients said that they were satisfied with the dental service they had received. They thought that they had been given enough information about their treatment and about any charges they might have to pay. They said staff were helpful and they considered that their treatment had met their dental needs. They were confident there were good standards of hygiene in the practice. They also said there was an open atmosphere in the practice that enabled them to suggest improvements and if necessary to make a complaint.

All of the five patients with whom we spoke gave us positive feedback about the practice. One of them said, 'I can't speak too highly of the dentist because he's so kind and he puts your mind at rest so I'm not too nervous. I'm more than pleased with the dental care I get there.'

However, some of the security checks completed on staff were not robust. This included the provider not having confirmed that a self employed dental hygienist was registered with their professional body. Also, verbal references obtained when staff were being recruited had not been recorded and so could not be checked. These shortfalls reduced the reassurance patients could be given that there were rigorous employment checks in place.
