During a routine inspection

On the day of inspection we found that only one person had received minor surgery in the year prior to our inspection. The other treatments provided in the clinic were cosmetic and not subject to regulation. The most recent satisfaction survey indicated that people who attended the clinic were satisfied with the care and treatment they have received. Audits are in place to ensure the quality of the service was maintained.

We examined the one record available for the person who had received treatment. We found it was well completed and that the service user had given informed consent for the procedure that they had received. The record assured us that the care was person centred, that the service user had been fully assessed, the treatment was appropriate and in accordance with their wishes.

The self-employed medical practitioner that the clinic contracted with to provide the minor surgical procedures offered was on the GMC register. The personnel file we examined for the medical practitioner provided evidence that appropriate recruitment procedures were in place and that they were appropriately qualified.

The clinic was clean and tidy on the day we inspected. There was evidence of infection control audits having taken place. We asked the manager to consider reviewing the arrangements for the storage and disposal of clinical waste generated by the Bournemouth and another local clinic.

During a routine inspection

One person using the service told us how they were able to understand the care and treatment choices available to them. "I was looking for a particular treatment and this was the only place in the area doing it. They were open and honest about the benefits and risks, with lots of literature and no hard-sell." Another person told us "I would, absolutely, recommend them. They've been here to give me the advice, but I know it's up to me to take it."

The care plans each contained a section which the person using the service was required to complete, identifying risk issues and their expectations from the treatment. One person using the service told us "They discuss all the risks and things and then let you make up your own mind."

We saw the policies which dealt with corporate and local arrangements related to the protection of vulnerable adults. This outlined types of abuse which people might experience, together with the roles and responsibilities of members of staff. There was a schedule, for staff to sign, indicating that they had read the policies and that they had completed in-house training.

The Clinic Manager had been appointed recently and told us "I've just finished my induction. This was quite thorough and included time at other clinics where one of the managers acts as my mentor."

We were shown minutes of staff meeting and the manager explained "I will use these to talk about how we need to change things to improve the experience of the people attending."
