During a routine inspection

During our visit to Cranmer Court we looked at the support plans of three people living there. This helped us understand if staff had the information they required to meet people's needs. We saw regular activities were carried out and information had been recorded in an individual's support plan on their likes and dislikes. On the day of our visit we observed people were engaged in various activities.

People who used the service were able to enjoy a healthy and balanced diet. We saw people's likes and dislikes were recorded within their support plans. Staff were very familiar with the different types of food people enjoyed, and how they liked to have it served to them.

The staff we spoke with were able to confidently describe all types of abuse and records showed staff had completed safeguarding training in the appropriate timescales. One member of staff said, "I would be able to tell if something was bothering a service user." and "Everyone is happy here, everyone gets looked after well."

The registered manager told us training was delivered by a variety of methods. For example, in-house training and attending courses with external training providers. We saw a detailed and comprehensive training schedule.

We saw a range of audits were carried out in the home to check the quality of the service. We saw copies of surveys from staff, relatives and external providers which contained positive comments about the service.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who used the service were protected against the risk of abuse. All staff had received training in abuse awareness and protecting vulnerable adults. There were information resources available to all staff in relation to safeguarding.

We found that people were supported by sufficient numbers of qualified, skilled and experienced staff which met people's needs.

We saw that the manager notified the Care Quality Commission about incidents that affected the health, safety and welfare of people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

Some of the people who lived at the home had complex care needs and had difficulties with verbal communication; however three people we met indicated that they liked living at the home and liked the staff. They told us "I like it here', 'I'm happy" and 'I like (name of person) who looks after me.'

Staff told us that some people were able to express their views and could give verbal consent whereas others used behaviours to show their agreement or non agreement. We saw that people smiled and appeared relaxed and comfortable with staff and others living in the home. During our inspection we saw that people received good care and that staff treated them with respect. Staff spent time with people who could not easily communicate and encouraged them to be involved in their surroundings. They communicated well with people and supported people who were anxious.

We saw staff engaging in a positive way with people and there was a lot of smiles and signs of wellbeing. People had a range of assessments and care plans in place that detailed the care and treatment they needed. Records showed people's health and care needs were monitored and reviewed regularly.

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. People were supported by suitably qualified and experienced staff. People were provided with information that would assist them if they needed to raise concerns or make a complaint.

During an inspection in response to concerns

In view of the communication needs of the people who use the service, we relied on observations between the staff and people who use the service.

We spoke with staff during our visit. Staff were very positive about working in the home and praised the teamwork and supportive atmosphere

Before we visited the home, we received information from an anonymous caller that there were not enough staff to meet the needs of the people who use the service. On the day of our visit there were enough staff on duty and staff were spending time with people who use the service and were not rushing around. The atmosphere was calm and no issues with staffing were identified.
