We scored the service as 3. The evidence showed a good standard. The service had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on transparency, equity, equality and human rights, diversity and inclusion, engagement, and understanding challenges and the needs of people.

The service aimed to deliver high quality hair regeneration services at good prices, provided with a high level of care. The service’s quality objectives were to continually improve the level of care and service, while establishing a good reputation.

The provider believed that their methodology of treating only 1 patient per day helped with delivering their aim. They wanted to deliver on quality rather than quantity. They believed an open and honest approach, coupled with patient centred care, would be the driving force for the service.

Staff were focused on the needs of patients receiving care delivered to meet their expectations. There was an open culture where the surgeon offered free consultations with patients to discuss treatment options and realistic outcomes. The surgeon gave examples of advice given to patients where their preferred option would not meet their expectation or was not suitable for their specific condition.

There was one director of the company. In addition, there was a company secretary who supported the director with administrative responsibilities.

The service was led by the surgeon who had the clinical skills, knowledge and experience to provide the care and treatment the service offered. They understood the challenges to the sustainability of the service. They were visible and approachable to other staff and patients.

There are no nationally recognised training guidelines for hair transplant technicians, therefore the service trained hair technicians and ensured their competencies in house. All staff members had disclosing and barring service (DBS) checks.

Freedom to speak up

We scored the service as 3. The evidence showed a good standard. The service fostered a positive culture where people felt they could speak up and their voice would be heard.

It was easy for staff and patients to give feedback and raise concerns about care received. The service treated concerns and complaints seriously. Staff met to discuss the feedback and look at improvements to patient care. Incidents would be discussed within staff meetings which were held monthly.

The service was small and employed 1 surgeon and 2 hair transplant technicians. This enabled the service to allow staff to work flexibly to positively support a work life balance.

They used these to manage and deliver good quality, sustainable care, treatment and support. They act on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes.

The service had an effective governance process and framework. The provider had developed a range of policies and procedures covering governance of the service. These included, but was not limited to, policies relating to data protection and information governance. This was much improved from the previous inspection.

The service aimed to have a successful practice. They did this by striving to provide a standard of service that consistently satisfied the needs and expectations of patients. They understood that this level of quality could only be achieved by continually identifying areas of improvement.

The service aimed to actively seek patient feedback, and responses were used to improve patient care. Responses were evaluated to identify areas of possible improvement.

The service aimed to complete annual reviews to assess how well the service had performed and to drive improvement through team training and appraisals.

Staff we spoke with were clear about their roles and responsibilities. The service held indemnity insurance as required.

The service engaged with external partners where possible but given the size and nature of the service there were limited opportunities to do so. However, for example they engaged in peer and clinical outcome reviews with other hair transplant surgeons external to the service.

Learning, improvement and innovation

The surgeon was an affiliated member of the British Association of Hair Restoration and required a minimum number of hours dedicated to continuous professional development to maintain the membership each year. The surgeon completed online training and attended national and international conferences about hair restoration.

The surgeon was aware of the benefits of an external review to identify learning. However, given the size of the service there was limited opportunity for participation in learning from internal and external reviews.
