During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a follow-up inspection. None of the patients attending the dental practice during the inspection visit wanted to speak with us. We reviewed the surveys returned by two patients attending the dental practice during our inspection visit. Both people gave positive responses about their experience. We looked at surveys received by the dental practice in April 2013 and these were also positive.

We spoke with three staff members. All three praised the dental practice and spoke about changes to the practice following the last inspection visit. One staff member said the changes made their job easier. One staff member said that patients regularly gave them positive verbal feedback about their experience.

We found that the provider had made improvements to the service following the last inspection. These improvements included a new system for recruiting and selecting staff. We also saw that the provider made changes to documentation to ensure that records were accurate and fit for purpose.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service. People told us that the practice was "very much clean" and that "staff were friendly." One person said that, out of the many dentists they had seen, this dental practice was "the best one." People told us that they found it easy to book an appointment, although one person was unable to get an emergency appointment at a time convenient to them. People were happy with the information provided to them and felt involved in their care.

We saw seven patient surveys that the dental practice collected, in which people said they would recommend the dental practice to friends and colleagues. Two people said the best thing about the dental practice was its "friendliness." We saw that the provider had a system in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service. We saw that the service was clean and hygienic. We saw that people were asked for their consent before provided with treatment. We found that not all records were fit for purpose.

We found that the provider did not always take adequate steps to collect and verify people's employment history or verify people's character before staff started work. We saw service records which referred to a staff member by the protected title of "dental nurse" although this staff member was no longer registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). The provider told us they would take action.
