Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were fully encouraged to maintain their independence and confirmed they were supported to do as much as they could for themselves and were fully involved in their care. A relative said, “[Family member] walks with a frame. They have some mobility issues and can’t stand for long periods of time. Staff have encouraged them to walk, and their mobility has improved.”
People confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care planning process and encouraged to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. One relative told us, “[Family member] always has the care plan in front of them. They do a review every 6 months and [family member] is always involved.” Another relative commented, “The staff know exactly what they’re doing, particularly on the personal care side, and have helped [family member] to accept the personal care. If [family member] says they do not want a wash, the carers accept it. They respect their decisions.”
Staff had a good understanding of protecting and respecting people's human rights ensuring they were able to make decisions about their care, treatment, and wellbeing. Staff received training about equality and diversity. One staff member told us, “People are involved in their care. When the care plan is put together the client is always involved. Also, after starting the care if the client is not happy with the care in place things are monitored, reviewed and adjusted as required.”
Staff told us how they supported people to maintain their independence. One said, “Our objective is to promote individuality and independence, and this means teaching our clients to be more independent. For example, we had a client who was wheelchair bound, and all their hydration and nutrition were carried out for them. Due to our regular support, they now assisted with food and fluid preparation to the best of their ability in a safe way.”
Promoting independence and maintaining skills was at the centre of the care delivery. The care plans focused on what people could do well and the support needed from staff. Care plans also set out when people needed verbal prompts rather than physical support. All these actions helped people to maintain their independence. Staff met with people, their relatives and other external professionals to discuss their support and any changes required, and these were reviewed regularly and updated when a person’s care requirements changed.
