During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people and two relatives to find out their opinions of the service. Everyone was extremely complimentary about the service. Comments included, 'We couldn't manage without someone like [staff name] coming,' 'It's a life saver,' 'They are the means in the long term that we can keep my husband at home' and 'I feel that Tynedale Hospice at Home gives me strength. They're a wonderful organisation.'

We talked with six members of staff including the new manager, the nurse in charge who had been providing management cover in the absence of a manager, two qualified nurses and two health care support staff. We also spoke with the clinical trustee.

We found that people were given appropriate information and support regarding their care and treatment and their diversity, values and human rights were respected. We observed detailed personal care being given. We concluded therefore that people's care and treatment reflected relevant research and guidance.

People told us that they felt safe with the staff who came into their homes. Staff were aware of the signs of abuse and what action they should take if abuse was suspected.

We considered there was enough staff employed to care for people and that systems were in place to assess the quality of the service. However, we found that failures to maintain appropriate records could put people at risk of receiving unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment.
