Our view of the service
We assessed this service on 8 July 2026. The assessment was undertaken as the provider had not been inspected since registration in 2025.
UKEMS is based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and operates a fleet of emergency ambulances staffed by technician-led crews and patient transport vehicles staffed by non emergency staff. The organisation provides both NHS emergency response services and non-emergency patient transport including mental health transfers. This includes delivering emergency care for children and young people.
This Independent Ambulance service provided the following activities:
- Patient transport services.
- Urgent and emergency services (UEC).
Patient Transport Services was the provider's main activity, accounting for 61,976 journeys in the previous 12 months. Urgent and Emergency Care accounted for a further 18,408 journeys (23% of the provider's total activity).
The main service provided by this provider was patient transport services. Where our findings on patient transport services – for example, management arrangements – also apply to other activity such as UEC, we do not repeat the information but cross-refer to the patient transport services.
UKEMS provided the following activities: treatment of disease, disorder and injury and transport services, triage and medical advice provided remotely. The service maintains both urgent and non urgent contracts with 2 local NHS ambulance trusts.
People's experience of this service
Due to the nature of the unannounced inspection and the nature and location of the work, we were unable to speak with any patients directly or observe any patient interactions but we reviewed all feedback received by the service.
