During an inspection looking at part of the service

At a previous inspection on 5 June 2013, we identified minor concerns with assessing and monitoring the quality of service. We found that commitments made in the practice's quality assurance policy had not been met. The practice had not carried out an up to date infection control audit in line with the Department of Health's guidance. There were x-ray machines on the premises that had not received up to date checks. We also found there had not been a recent patient survey .The provider subsequently sent us an action plan to say how they were going to become compliant with the Health and Social Care Act (2008) Regulations 2010.

At this follow up inspection, we carried out checks to ensure the provider had met their action plan. We found the provider now had up to date infection control audits, x-ray certification and methods to gain patient's views in place.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who were visiting the dental practice during our inspection. All praised the service, the staff and standard of treatment provided.

People told us that they were treated with respect and were always involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. One person said 'I have been coming to this dentist for over ten years and they have been excellent, I have no complaints whatsoever'. Another person said 'They are very professional and good at explaining things; they always give advice and guidance on oral hygiene'.

Patients were asked about their medical history and we saw individualised clinical notes detailing assessment, risk assessment, examination and treatment planning. Patients told us they were given information about treatment options so they were able make informed decisions about their treatment and dental care.

We saw that emergency equipment was available and readily accessible to staff who had received training in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and knew what to do in the event of an emergency.

The practice had a quality assurance system but this had not been put fully into practice. This meant that the people using the practice could have been at risk because potential hazards to their health safety and welfare had not been of identified and controlled.
