HMP Fosse Way is a Category C male training and resettlement prison located in the city of Leicester, England. The prison accommodates approximately 1978 adult prisoners. The healthcare services are provided by Practice Plus Group Health and Rehabilitation Services Limited (PPG).
We carried out this assessment in response to information of concern. We assessed 15 quality statements over the safe, effective, responsive and well-led key questions.
We found:
- Staffing levels had improved significantly since the provider had taken over the service, although some pressures remained.
- We found significant shortfalls in the management of patients’ medicines that posed a risk to their safety.
- Systems to support consistent monitoring care planning and follow up were not yet sufficiently embedded to ensure patients received personalised care in line with national guidance.
- Substance misuse services were well developed and provided a comprehensive range of evidence based interventions.
- Patients requiring mental health support did not always receive timely care and the range of treatment options was limited.
- Staff delivered kind and compassionate care to their patients.
- Patient complaints were well managed.
- While strengthened governance systems were evident, some areas required further improvement, and not all risks were identified on the service improvement plan.
We found 2 breaches of regulation in relation to medicines management, care planning, mental health provision, and good governance. In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.
We do not currently rate services provided in prisons. We highlight good practice, identify areas requiring improvement, and take regulatory action where necessary.
