Requires improvement

Updated 29 December 2025

Date of Assessment: 6 January to 28 January 2026. Christopher Grange Rhona House is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to a maximum of 28 people. At the time of our assessment 25 people resided at the home, some people were living with dementia. We undertook this assessment following concerns were received which indicated some people may not be receiving appropriate care within a clean and safe environment. We found improvements were needed and the provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance.

Some aspects of medicines management were not safe, and improvements were needed to ensure risk assessments and care plans were accurate, detailed and care provided to people was appropriately monitored. Additional training was needed around medicines to ensure the provider made regular checks on staff competency.

Systems to review, analyse and learn lessons from accidents and incidents were very new and previous events which had occurred had little oversight by the provider. Aspects of the environment and systems to reduce the risk of cross infection needed some improvement.

People were supported to access healthcare and other specialist services when they needed and staff worked productively with other professionals. People’s religious needs were met, and people were encouraged to maintain relationships with those important to them. Peoples wishes and choices about care were respected. Staff spoke about people with fondness and enjoyed working at Christopher Grange Rhona House. The management team was open, transparent and receptive to our feedback. They demonstrated a commitment to making any improvements needed to people’s care.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Updated 29 December 2025

Most people spoke positively about the support they received from staff and about their overall experience living in Christopher Grange Rhona House. Some family members spoke about their frustrations about changes in managers and providers in recent years but were complimentary about the care and nursing staff who provided direct care to people. We observed several activities taking place however, activities were not always available for people who were cared for in bed and this was an area which needed some focus by the provider. We observed positive interactions between people and staff. People were spoken to respectfully and staff demonstrated kindness and compassion when assisting people. Throughout our assessment we observed a relaxed atmosphere and people were not rushed when receiving care. People were encouraged to decorate and personalise their bedrooms in line with their preferences.
