Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 30 March 2026

Date of assessment 21 April 2026. Offsite review of documentation was completed on 22 April 2026. Feedback was given to the service on 23 April 2026.

At the time of this assessment, Springfield Care Home was being refurbished to provide nursing care on the upper floor. Moreover, the ownership and leadership of the service had changed since September 2025 with a new provider and a new registered manager who had experience of care home leadership from other areas. We found the new providers investment in expanding and refurbishing the service to be significant.

At the time of our inspection, the service was providing support for 9 people. The service is registered for a maximum of 40 people. The registered manager explained the current under occupancy was due to the refurbishment works and the provider plans to provide nursing care in the near future.

The assessment was prompted due to the CQC identifying the service to be a very high risk. This was due to the previous rating of requires improvement (under the former provider) and the date since the last inspection, report published 19 May 2020. The CQC had received feedback that the service needed to make improvements in some areas of it’s management and culture.

Several relatives we spoke with were keen to distinguish between the service now, under current leadership, and the previous poor care standards. There was widespread acknowledgement that improvements brought about under the new registered manager were highly positive. One relative told us, “I have complete faith in the new manager.”

Several people and relatives commented about the continuity of care from a stable staff team. The registered manager reported that there were currently no agency staff used, which aided continuity.

Staff were trained, skilled and recruited safely. Staff showed competence in their roles and kindness towards people, relatives and each other. The governance and culture of the service had significantly improved under the new management.

Medicines were stored and managed safely and administered by trained staff. The service was safe, clean and well maintained.

Staff respected people’s wishes, upheld their dignity and ensured consent was respected.

People were not unlawfully restricted, the processes in place at the service ensured appropriate documentation was in place if people lived with restrictions which were imposed to ensure their safety.
