All Inspections

29 August 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people who used the service and three carers. All of the people we spoke with were very enthusiastic about the service and the opportunities it provided for people. We heard that the support provided was individualised to meet people's needs. We were told when a change in service was required that this had been discussed and agreed between the person and the carer. One person told us 'I talk to my carer and we plan what I need to do. They always talk to me about my support.'

We were told that the carers' role was to support and encourage people to maintain as much independence as possible. We heard that people felt comfortable with the carers. One person told us 'my carers are very good I feel really at home.'

People told us they felt safe using this service and knew what to do if they had any concerns. They had all met the manager and were confident about talking to them if there were any issues.

We saw there were daily diaries completed by the carers which demonstrated they understood the support to be provided. We read that carers took action when there were any concerns about people's support. We were told by one person who used the service 'I am very happy because I have my independence but there is someone around if I need it."

14 January 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who used North Somerset Shared Lives Scheme, and three of the carers who provide the support to those using the service. All of the people we spoke with said they were happy with the way their placement had been arranged. People who used the service told us they made visits to meet with new carers. One person told us, "It's important because you have to make sure you get on.' One carer told us that "the 'matching' process is very good and tries to make sure we are the most suitable person to support the person using the service.'

All of the people we spoke with said they could make decisions about their lives. One person told us "the manager talked to me about what I liked to do and what I needed help with." One person told us they felt safe because they had confidence in the carer supporting them. On our visits we saw people were receiving appropriate care, support, and treatment by trained and confident carers. One person who lived with a carer told us, "They are always going on courses and seem to enjoy them."

During our home visits we saw how the service and carers were monitored by North Somerset Shared Lives Scheme to make sure their performance is satisfactory.

In this report the name of Louise Coburn appears as registered manager but who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were the Registered

Manager on our register at the time'.
