During an inspection looking at part of the service

On 20 April 2012 the General Dental Council (GDC) made an order that the registered provider of this service, Dr A D'Souza, was to be suspended from practising dentistry for a period of nine months, in order to protect patients and the public. He was reinstated by the GDC on 19 February 2013.

We visited the service unannounced on the 14 February 2013, in order to assess compliance with a warning notice and five compliance actions issued at the previous inspection. We were only able to speak with the newly appointed receptionist and look at some of the records. We re-visited the practice on the 21 February 2013. We were unable to see satisfactory evidence in order to make a judgement as to whether the service was compliant or non-compliant. We re-visited again on the 28 February 2013. At this visit the registered person attended, and we were able to complete and conclude the inspection.

We were told by the registered person that he would not be coming back to work at the practice. The root canal treatment dentist who worked at the practice one and a half days a week had taken on some of the management responsibilities during the period of the registered person's suspension. This person said they had been unable to make any real changes and had been hampered by the registered person's reluctance to provide information and support.

28 August 2012

During an inspection in response to concerns

Due to the current circumstances in the practice, no patients were being seen or treated by the registered provider.

On the day of the visit we were told that the locum dentist had telephoned in sick and that appointments had been cancelled for the eight people that had booked to be seen that morning. Therefore we were unable to speak with people who used the service for the purpose of this review.

The review was undertaken by two compliance inspectors and assisted by a pharmacist and a specialist dental advisor.
