Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 28 May – 5 June 2026

This inspection was carried out because the provider had not been inspected since 2019.

Spion Kop is a 6-bedded care home which supports people aged 18+ who have a mental health condition.

People were kept safe and supported to live fulfilled lives. Staff and leaders were skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate. The provider ensured that a person-centred approach was used across the service, with clear and detailed care plans in place.

There was a relaxed and homely environment at the provider, with spacious communal areas and bedrooms. It was clean and tidy, with regular checks being made by staff to ensure that a good standard of hygiene was maintained.

There were enough staff to keep people safe and provide support. Medicines were well managed and people who were able to were supported to administer their own medicine by trained staff. There were communal activities available for people to take part in, and staff supported people to take part in activities in the community where they needed support.

Staff helped people to develop their confidence to carry out tasks independently, and people were supported in the least restrictive way possible.

The provider ensured that staff were aware of their vision and values, and the management team were knowledgeable and experienced. They did this through embedding these values in the policies and procedures, and by leaders setting an example to staff.

There were systems in place to ensure good governance and maintain a high standard of care. Staff kept clear and accurate records, and leaders regularly audited and analysed recorded information in order to spot any concerning trends and make improvements to the service.
