Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 29 May to 2 June 2025. The Fields is a care home with nursing, providing support to people with a learning disability and/or autism. This assessment has been undertaken of a specialist service that is registered for use by autistic people or people with a learning disability. We assessed the care provision under Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture, as it is registered as a specialist service for this population group. The service can support up to 54 people. At the time of our assessment 53 people were using the service. The service is a large home, which is not in line with current best practice guidance. However, the service is split into 7 smaller units. Some improvements were required to ensure risks posed to people from the environment were mitigated. However, this was immediately rectified on the day of our assessment. Some improvements were also required to ensure all staff felt supported by the management team. This was being actioned by the management team. People were safeguarded from the risk of abuse and medicines were safely managed. Detailed records were in place to guide staff about how to keep people safe, manage behaviours of distress and peoples wishes and preferences. Governance systems were in place, to ensure the service operated safely and effectively. At our last assessment, the service was rated good overall and outstanding in well led. The service is now rated good overall, and good in all domains.

People's experience of this service

People received person centred support, in line with needs, wishes and preferences. People and relatives told us staff were kind and caring. Comments included, “I have always been pleased with the care my relative receives, the staff are always wonderful. They know how to deal with [name], We are invited to all the ‘do’s’ they have like the sensory garden and we always go. The manager is brilliant. They are happy here. I have peace of mind and nothing to worry about now.” And “They (staff) all really care about my relative. They do arts and crafts and make birthday cards etc. The best thing is that they are so friendly and outgoing. They really care and engage with my relative.” Professionals who worked with the service told us staff acted upon their advice, provided kind support, and communication with the service was effective. A professional said, “Over the course of my interactions with the team, I have consistently observed a high standard of care being delivered to people. The staff demonstrate a strong commitment to person-centred care, treating people with dignity, respect, and compassion at all times. Communication between the care home team and external health services has been exemplary. Referrals are timely and appropriate, and staff are proactive in seeking advice or support when people’s needs change. This level of engagement supports early intervention and ensures continuity of care.”
