During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spoke with three people who were registered with the practice. We also spoke with the dentist and the practice manager who was also the dental nurse. We reviewed four dental records, policies and procedures and the quality assurance records.

People who used the practice told us that they were happy with the quality of treatment they received. They felt they were given enough information about their treatment options and were able to ask any questions that they wanted to.

People told us that the practice was clean and tidy and that they had no concerns about hygiene. The staff told us that regular infection control checks ensured that hygiene and cleanliness was maintained in clinical areas.

We saw that there were regular audits and quality checks. We found evidence of actions being implemented from audits.

During a routine inspection

This dental practice is a small practice owned and operated by one dentist. It is located on a main road just outside Bromsgrove town centre. The practice is made up of a small team which includes the dentist, a nurse and two receptionist/general duty workers.

People receiving care and treatment from this dentist all pay independently. The practice does not have a contract with the NHS.

This practice provides a full range of general dental assessments and treatments and also offers a range of cosmetic services.

As part of our review we spoke with one person at the practice following their treatment and two people by phone. The people we spoke with by phone had all recently received treatment from this dentist. People spoke highly of this dentist practice. People were satisfied with the care and treatment they had received below are a few comments they made;

'I was absolutely petrified about having my treatment but they were all brilliant. I was totally reassured and looked after. I was so grateful for the way my treatment went I returned the next week and took them a box of chocolates'.

'The dentist always explains everything to me before I have my treatment. They also tell me exactly how much my treatment will cost'.

'The staff are fantastic so friendly and pleasant'.

We spoke with the dental nurse who told us; 'This is a small practice. We are able to give people enough time before, during and after their appointments so that things can be fully explained. We never hurry people'.

Evidence that we gathered during this review confirmed that people are assessed to decide what dental and oral healthcare needs they may have. Treatments that people may need are discussed with them and are carried out in a satisfactory way.

Overall we found good practices regarding infection control and cleaning procedures which demonstrated compliance in this area. We made some suggestions for minor adjustments and additions to processes which could enhance these processes further. The dentist and nurse were receptive to our suggestions and confirmed that they would action these.
