We found that the provider had addressed the compliance action we imposed at our last inspection. They had implemented new procedures for ensuring the security of the premises and to protect any staff that lone work as part of their role.

During a routine inspection

There were no patients available for us to speak with at the time of our inspection. However, in order to obtain the views of people using the service we looked at the provider's latest patient survey results from April 2012. We saw that people were generally very satisfied with the care and treatment they received at Optimax in Southend, with 56.9% of people rating the overall experience as 'excellent' and 38.8% of respondents saying it was 'good'. We were told that Optimax was about to launch its patient survey for 2013 and we suggested that questions about infection control and the quality of the environment were included.

The provider should review the lone-working and security of the premises policies and practices to ensure that risks are properly managed.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who had appointments on the day of our inspection. The first person was attending for an aftercare appointment. They said that they were very pleased with the service and the information they had received. They described the aftercare process as 'excellent'. They said they were made to feel comfortable and that staff had been open and honest about what to expect after having the treatment. They said they would recommend the service to others.

We spoke with two other people who were about to undergo refractive laser eye surgery. Both said they had received good pre-treatment assessments and that consultations had been thorough. They were given clear information on aftercare instructions and treatment prices. Both people said they had been asked to give consent before having the surgery and they had been made to feel comfortable about raising any queries they had about any aspects of the treatment.
