During an assessment under our new approach

Date of assessment 18 and 23 June 2025. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre is a residential care home, providing accommodation and personal care for up to 59 people over the age of 65. There were 45 people living at the home on the day of inspection. Some people had specialist needs associated with dementia. This was a responsive inspection based on the length of time since the last inspection. The inspection was prompted in part by notification of an incident following which a person using the service died. This incident is subject to further investigation by CQC as to whether any regulatory action should be taken. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident.

However, the information shared with CQC about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of risk of the environment. This inspection examined those risks. A comprehensive inspection was carried out to incorporate all areas or safety and risk management. This was the first inspection since the provider changed their registration. There were robust processes in place for auditing and having oversight of the home and care delivery. Some areas of improvements were identified, such as environmental maintenance, however the management team and provider were proactive to ensure these improvements were underway. There were relevant risk assessments in place for people, and these were viewed in their care plans. We observed staff interacting with people, they knew people well and relatives’ feedback confirmed this. Staff had a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities. All staff spoken with gave positive feedback of their team relationships, and they felt the management team were approachable and supportive. It was clear the registered manager was a capable and inclusive leader. The management team had a good oversight of the business, and care delivery and had taken time to get to know their staff and people living at Clifden House Dementia Care Centre.
