Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first inspection of a newly registered provider. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Staff were friendly and created a pleasant atmosphere, sharing appropriate banter and holding conversation with people. People told us staff were kind and caring. One person said, “I think the staff are caring but they are always busy as well. Some have time for a quick chat sometimes." One relative said, “The care is wonderful, I can’t fault it.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. The provider employed an activity co-ordinator who provided social stimulation for people and organised events. One person said, “We do activities and there is something most days. I like just watching the telly as well. I do have visitors. They are always made welcome.” Another person said, “The activities [co-ordinator] is very good. They take me out on a Thursday to the retail park.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Care records captured important information about people's likes, dislikes, routines and personal histories, and staff demonstrated a good understanding of what mattered to them. People’s cultural, religious and personal identities were respected and staff supported them to maintain these aspects of their lives. For example, the home arranged for a church service to take place every week. People personalised their rooms with personal possessions and photographs which helped create a familiar and homely environment.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. We observed staff responding to people in a timely way to ensure their needs were met. People told us staff attended to them when they requested support. One person said, “They [staff] aren’t bad, when I've used the buzzer, they have been quick to help."

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The management team provided regular supervision, training and opportunities for reflective practice which helped them develop their skills and build confidence. Staff told us they could raise concerns and found the management team approachable. One staff member said, “The managers are approachable and very understanding.”
