During an assessment of Specialist eating disorder services

We rated the service as Good. The service provided treatment that met the needs of patients with an eating disorder in a community setting.

Feedback from patients and their families was positive. Patients felt meaningfully involved in their treatment.

Leaders in the service were involved in developing evidence based guidance for eating disorders and contributed to research and the development of national strategy.

However, the service was in breach of Regulation 17 Good Governance in relation to staff and directors files, oversight and mitigation of environmental risks and lack of clear framework of what must be discussed at a team and senior level. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

Mental Capacity Act Compliance Summary

100% of staff had had training in the Mental Capacity Act.

Staff had a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, in particular the five statutory principles.

The provider had a policy on the Mental Capacity Act, including deprivation of liberty safeguards. The policy also included considerations for children and young people, including Gillick competence. Staff were aware of the policy and had access to it.

Staff knew where to get advice from within the provider regarding the Mental Capacity Act.

Staff took all practical steps to enable patients to make their own decisions. Information was made more accessible including easy read and more visual information.

The nominated individual had overall responsibility to monitor adherence to the Mental Capacity Act.

During an assessment of the hospital overall

We assessed ABBI Clinic Manchester on 2 June 2026.

The ABBI Clinic Manchester was registered with CQC on 20 February 2025 to provide the regulated activity Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury.

There was not a registered manager in post, however the nominated individual who used to be the registered manager was covering the role whilst they recruited a registered manager.

The service provides intensive day care and out patients care for patients with a primary diagnosis of an eating disorder. Patients access the service either as an alternative to inpatient treatment or as a step down from inpatient care.

The service provides individual key working, nutritional rehabilitation, a group programme, meal support, individual therapy, physical health monitoring and patients have regular reviews by the specialist eating disorder GP and specialist eating disorder psychiatrist.

This was the first inspection of the ABBI Clinic Manchester.

At this assessment we identified a breach of Regulation 17 Good Governance.

At this assessment we assessed one assessment service group; specialist eating disorder services. We assessed 33 quality statements.

We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

We rated the service as Good. The service provided treatment that met the needs of patients with an eating disorder in a community setting. This met best practice guidance. However, the service was in breach of Regulation 17 Good Governance in relation to staff and directors files, oversight and mitigation of environmental risks and lack of clear framework of what must be discussed at a team and senior level. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
