During an inspection looking at part of the service

In April 2012 we carried out an inspection of Winscombe Dental Practice and we

identified where the service needed to make improvements to achieve compliance. Following the review the provider told us about the changes they intended to make. The purpose of this inspection was to check on those improvements. The area we were concerned about was:

Outcome 7- Safeguarding people who use services from abuse

For this inspection we did not involve people using the service and we did not visit. We asked the provider to send us documentary evidence of how they have ensured that they were meeting the regulation for this outcome. The provider also sent the commission evidence of action they had taken with regard to the improvement action that we set for outcome 4 ' Care and welfare of people who use services. The provider was meeting the regulation but sent us evidence of the checking system now in place to ensure continued compliance.

6 March 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with seven people who use the practice and they told us they were extremely happy with the service provided. One person told us 'the team are professional and friendly'. Another person told us: 'I am treated as an individual and they respond quickly when there is a problem'.

A new patient to the practice told us 'it has a good reputation locally. I am a nervous patient and he made me feel relaxed and comfortable'. Two other people told us their children had been coming since they were little and although now have their own families, still returned to this dentist. All seven people told us they felt they were given enough information about their treatment options and relevant fees as well as time to ask questions in order to make an informed decision.

The seven people we spoke with told us the staff were friendly and treated them with respect and their privacy was maintained. We saw two people with their children who appeared happy and relaxed in the practice. We observed a good example of how the dentist ensured that communication was age-appropriate. We were given examples by parents of how they encouraged children and young people with good dental habits and hygiene.

All seven people we spoke with felt confident and comfortable with the practice staff. Two people told us the practice is 'excellent'. Three people told us there was good availability and flexibility of appointments, while another person told us the time keeping was 'brilliant'.

All seven people we spoke with told us they were aware of the emergency number and had always had an appointment within 24 hours. We observed a telephone call to the receptionist, by someone in need of an urgent appointment. They were offered one within three hours.

The practice had disabled access and all facilities are on the same level inside the practice.

People were mainly protected from abuse, by staff who had some understanding of vulnerable adults despite no training. Staff had received training in safeguarding children and young people and recognising signs of abuse through oral examination.
