During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two of the three people who lived in the home. They told us that they liked living at the home and that the staff helped them with a variety of daily tasks and were always friendly.

We spoke with a relative who was visiting the home and they told us that that 'both me and my family are really pleased with the progress our daughter has made here, it has made such a difference to her life and one which we cannot praise enough'.

Staff we spoke with were able to clearly tell us what they would do if they came across a safeguarding situation. Staff also said they felt they would be able to challenge other staff about any work practices they were unsure of.

There were effective recruitment and selection processes in place. We reviewed two staff files which showed us the correct checks had been performed by the provider prior to them commencing work.

We saw that the home had a current procedure and policy for the investigation of complaints. A complaints leaflet in easy read format was made available on a notice board in the living room so it could be seen and understood by the people living at the home. This also included details of an independent advocacy service that people could access if they wished.

During a routine inspection

When we visited Orchard Leigh we took an 'expert by experience' with us. The expert by experience in this case was someone who has personal experience of caring for young people with asperger's syndrome. The purpose of involving an expert by experience is to increase the voice of the people using the service.

The four people living in Orchard Leigh spoke with both the inspector and the expert by experience and were able to tell us what it was like to live there and how they were supported.

They told us that they were very involved in all that goes on in the home and that they help out in the running of the home.

All four people using the service had previously lived at The Rookery and told us that they had not chosen to move to Orchard Leigh. One said 'the move had worked out well for them because it was quieter and less busy'. Another person said that they were pleased to be living at Orchard Leigh and would not want to go back to The Rookery.

People are encouraged and supported to use community services and facilities.

People told us that they were able to make choices about their day to day care, and that they had individual timetables which they had agreed to. All four told us that their views regarding their care and support were taken into account and they were listened to. 'Everything is fairly relaxed here', 'I do everything for myself but the staff are there when I need them. Sometimes they have to help me calm down' and 'I want to be able to live independently and the staff are helping me cope with that'.

People living in the home said 'I feel safe' and 'I like it here, it is nice and quiet and I like that'. Two people said that the staff were good to them.
