Background to this inspection

We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. This inspection was planned to check whether the provider is meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

As part of CQC’s response to care homes with outbreaks of COVID-19, we are conducting reviews to ensure that the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practice is safe and that services are compliant with IPC measures. This was a targeted inspection looking at the IPC practices the provider has in place. We also asked the provider about any staffing pressures the service was experiencing and whether this was having an impact on the service.

This inspection took place on 16 February 2022 and was announced. We gave the service 24 hours’ notice of the inspection.

About the service

Byrnhill Grove is a care home situated in a sheltered accommodation complex.. Byrnhill Grove is registered to provide accommodation for up to 17 people who have needs associated with advanced age and early stage dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 14 people living in the home.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People and relatives were positive about all aspects of the service and care provided. All the people we spoke with praised the staff for their caring, kind and respectful attitudes and confirmed their preferences were listened to and respected.

Staff were clear about their safeguarding responsibilities and knew how to recognise and report potential abuse. Staff carried out their roles and responsibilities effectively. They had a good understanding of managing risks and supported people to reach their full potential through consistent, personalised care.

Recruitment practices were effective and there were sufficient numbers of staff available to meet people’s needs. People received their medicines as prescribed and infection control risks were managed appropriately.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Staff worked in partnership with external health and social care professionals to ensure they supported people well and effectively. People received enough to eat and drink and were happy with the food provided. Staff had received effective training and support to enable them to carry out their role safely. They received regular supervision to help develop their skills and support them in their role.

People and their relatives felt the management team were open, approachable and supportive. Everyone was confident the management team would take action to address any concerns promptly. The provider had effective governance systems in place to identify concerns in the service and drive improvement. There were robust systems in place to assess the quality of the service provided.

The service was committed to ensuring that there was equality and inclusion across the workforce and for the people who used the service. People were fully included in everything in relation to the service and encouraged and supported to be actively involved in the development of the service.

The provider and management team were fully committed to ensuring the service continually improved and was proactive in implementing change. There was a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and lessons learnt from incidents and people's feedback were used to improve the service further.
